Term 2 2023

Welcome back to school following the half term holiday.  We do hope both children and parents found sometime to rest, sometime to spend together and sometime to have fun.  We are aware that holidays can be challenging times for some families,  we aim to welcome back your children with warmth and kindness.  In Term 2 the children are usually quite settled within their classroom, know their routines and therefore are ready to learn, however if your child is finding aspects of their week a challenge please do talk to their teacher in the first instance.

Please continue to use this site this term to support you and your child's needs. I will post new and relevant materials linked with SEND, additional needs, mental health and SEND Wiltshire support materials. Again, I encourage you to scroll down to the bottom of the page again as there are a number of materials from last year and beyond which continue to be useful.

As usual if you have any queries or questions about SEND at Durrington CE Junior School which can't be answered from reading our website, Facebook page or by reading our SEND Information Report, please don't hesitate to contact me at school Monday to Thursday.

Mrs Jessica de Vries

Special Educational Needs & Disabilities Coordinator and Senior Mental Health Lead

POET Survey - if you haven't already, please fill in the form and have your sayWe are asking parents and carers of children and young people to let us know how the process of getting support worked for you, and what difference it has made to your child or young person. This is so we can help improve things for others who need support. The responses to the survey will be used to help improve the way people get support both in Wiltshire and on a national scale. You can answer all or part of these questions and all of it will be anonymous.

I have put together a list of schools with detail that you may find useful when considering the best provision for your child in the future.  As you can see from some recent postings there has been considerable investment in SEND provision for future builds and offers, it does seem to be a positive outlook for some of our learners in the future.

Special school and resource base development projects - Local Offer (wiltshire.gov.uk)

Two Wiltshire secondary schools will be providing a new service to help young people with Special Educational Needs and or Disabilities (SEND) from September 2023.

Both Clarendon Academy and John of Gaunt will have secondary resource bases on their sites with 10 spaces available at each site for incoming Year 7 pupils with SEND.

The secondary resource bases will provide young people with access to enhanced support, spending time in the base for specialist intervention while also joining mainstream classes.

Wiltshire Children's Community Services - message from the HCRG Care groupThe Wiltshire Autism Assessment Service (WAAS) is offering pre-assessment support sessions about emotions, behaviour and the autism assessment during the summer, following a successful pilot in March.  Information about these is available in the WAAS monthly newsletter and you can sign up for the sessions on familysupport@hcrgcaregroup.com. WAAS will be collecting feedback on them so they can continue to plan sessions that parents/carers find accessible and useful. If you would like to receive this newsletter please contact 0300 247 0090.  The Wiltshire Parent Carer Council helped facilitate three parent carer groups in Wiltshire and is producing a report sharing how the autism assessment experience is for families from start to finish. This will help us to plan assessment appointments to include more helpful information for parents, carers and young people. We are continuing to experience unprecedented demand for our specialist children’s services and we apologise if this means that you are not hearing back from us about your child/young person’s referral as quickly as we would like you to or if we are not responding to your message or email as quickly as we would like to.  We are working hard to ensure that you receive a response from us as soon as possible.  If you do need to contact us, please use our Single Point of Access on 0300 247 0090 or vcl.wiltshirespa@nhs.net and a member of our team will be able to help you. Information about our services and signposting to helpful resources is available on our website and information on how to make a referral  If you think your child/young person needs a referral to one of our services then please discuss this with your child/young person’s preschool or school. They will discuss your concerns with you and if appropriate make a referral to our services.  There is no need for you to visit your GP for them to make the referral.

Change of Contract for Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities Information Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS)
Wiltshire Council has asked the WPCC to share the following update about the new contract for the SENDIASS service…
Wiltshire Council has awarded a contract to Family Action to provide the Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities Information Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) from 3 April 2023, who will take over from the current provider (KIDS). The service will continue to be an important support for SEND families offering help advice and information.
Wiltshire Council and the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board (BSW ICB) have increased the investment for SENDIASS to build on the current service and keep up with the increasing demand. Work will continue to decrease waiting times over the coming months, and we are working with the new provider to ensure this meets the needs of our families and children.
Amy Brooke, Family Action, Deputy Director for Services and Innovation, South, said: “We are delighted that Wiltshire Council appointed Family Action to deliver the Wiltshire SENDIASS. Family Action’s years of expertise, across our eight existing SENDIAS services, will enable us to provide families in Wiltshire with a service that is free, high quality, impartial and confidential. We are looking forward to working with children and young people with SEND in Wiltshire, and their parents/carers. We will be working together to empower them to have an informed and active role in decision making, and we will ensure that they continue to receive the highest quality of support.”
The current service continues to be provided by KIDS until 3 April. As a result of the change of provider, there will be no service on 3 April to allow the new team and systems to be made operational.  There may also be some short-term disruption over the Easter period while colleagues familiarise themselves with new systems and processes but we will be working hard to minimise this.
If you have questions about this change and want to discuss them you can contact Wiltshire Council at CandFcommissioning@wiltshire.gov.uk

Neurodiversity Week

Our children at Durrington CE Junior School are starting to use the term and become more familiar with the language and its meaning. Please check out the resources and become more familiar yourself.

"People vary in the way that their brains
take in, process, and respond to information..."  (The British Psychological Society)

Someone who is 'neurodivergent' may learn, think or behave differently
than what is considered "typical" (also known as 'neurotypical').
Misunderstanding can lead to children feeling isolated,
excluded from their peers, and frustrated.
